Most people mistakenly believe that the Internet is a place of anonymity and separate from television propaganda. Unfortunately, things are different. It sounds scary and Russia is not even going to hide that it plans to improve the methods of programming societies for specific views. One of the system’s modules called “dispute” is to monitor the local blogosphere and forums for free exchange of ideas. In a word, in order to “rip off the proverbial beret” you must first get to know it.
According to press releases, the system will be tested on countries that were once members of the Soviet Union. The new Russian approach to waging information warfare will culminate in posting what intelligence needs to socialize.
Someone would be wrong to consider the technology Russia is using as something extraordinary. Polish tax offices use the services of a certain company that matches transactions on Allegro and provides information about them. Bringing together information sources can only deepen the level of murder and total control over citizens.
Influencing public opinion with the use of social networks is often used by Americans simply ruthlessly cutting out some content. Facebook itself, as well as our class or Gadu Gadu must be and probably is a temptation for the services. It’s hard to believe that they don’t use such plentiful public databases.
If the Russians want to influence the thinking of other nations, maybe it is worth asking whether they are not doing it anymore by finding out what a nation of several tens of millions will learn about this or that, which is beneficial for Russia.
There is another publicly known project of influencing local communities by instilling a specific worldview. These are coordinated internet entries coordinated on the basis of broadcasts of the day. The Jews are the best at this. All over the world, Diaspora Jews work together in a project called “hasbara.”
Its purpose is to promote Israel in the international arena and to promote its policy. Discussion forums in specific countries have literally been sown with information. The hasbary method can be used on various media, not only on the Internet, but by inspiring specific press articles, etc. Probably the Russians are planning just such massive internet activity, which will be properly targeted and thanks to having a monitoring system they will also be able to see to what extent the ideas they have sown have sprouted.
